Health of the Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is, in general, a healthy and long-lived breed. However, as with any purebred dog, certain hereditary conditions exist that must be understood, monitored, and managed through responsible breeding.

Health is not a matter of luck. It is a matter of selection.

Recommended Health Testing for Breeding Dogs

In responsible breeding programs, breeding dogs should ideally have:

  • Official hip evaluations

  • Official elbow evaluations

  • Ophthalmologic examination

  • MDR1 genetic test

  • HSF4 genetic test

  • CEA genetic test

  • Additional genetic panels when available

The combination of clinical examinations and genetic testing allows breeders to reduce risks and make informed breeding decisions.

Structural and Functional Health

Health is not determined by genetics alone. It also includes:

  • Correct structure

  • Efficient movement

  • Balanced temperament

  • Absence of morphological exaggerations

A functional and correctly constructed Australian Shepherd is less prone to injuries and structural problems.

Main Hereditary Conditions in the Breed

Hip Dysplasia (HD)

Hip dysplasia is a developmental abnormality of the hip joint that can lead to pain and osteoarthritis.

  • It is evaluated through official radiographic examinations.

  • Results can be certified through systems such as FCI, OFA, or other recognized organizations.

Elbow Dysplasia (ED)

Elbow dysplasia is less common than hip dysplasia but remains an important condition within the breed.

  • It is diagnosed through official radiographic examinations.

  • Results can be certified through systems such as FCI, OFA, or other recognized organizations.

 

Eye Diseases

Certain ocular conditions may occur in the breed. They can be detected through:

  • Regular ophthalmologic examinations carried out by veterinary eye specialists

  • Genetic testing in the case of some

 

Among the most well-known conditions are:

  • CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly)

  • PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)

MDR1 (Drug Sensitivity)

The MDR1 gene is present in the Australian Shepherd and may cause sensitivity to certain medications.

Even dogs that test clear or carrier may show individual variation in drug response. For this reason, as a precaution, it is recommended to always inform the veterinarian that the dog belongs to a herding breed and to avoid MDR1-related medications whenever possible.

 

Prevention and awareness remain the best tools to protect the dog’s health.

HSF4 (Hereditary Cataracts)

The HSF4 mutation is associated with hereditary cataracts and can be identified through genetic testing.

Idiopathic Epilepsy

A predisposition exists in certain bloodlines. Although it cannot always be detected through genetic testing, responsible selection and thorough knowledge of bloodlines are essential.

The Merle Gene and Health

The merle gene is part of the breed’s visual identity. However, breeding two merle dogs together may produce double merle puppies, which carry an increased risk of:

  • Hearing impairments

  • Ocular defects

For this reason, ethical breeding programs avoid merle-to-merle matings.
