The Coat of an Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd was bred first and foremost as a working dog, and its coat clearly reflects that function. It is a moderately long double coat, designed to protect the dog in a wide range of weather conditions, including sun, heat, wind, rain, and cold.
The coat consists of:
-
A weather-resistant outer coat, straight to slightly wavy
-
A dense undercoat, the amount of which varies depending on climate and season
The hair is shorter and smooth on the head, ears, the front of the legs, and below the hocks. Moderate feathering is present on the chest, the backs of the legs, the britches, and the tail. Males typically develop a more pronounced mane and frill than females.
It is important to emphasize that the correct Aussie coat should never be excessively long, profuse, silky, or artificially sculpted. It must maintain a natural and functional appearance. The breed was developed to work long hours with freedom of movement, and the coat should support that purpose rather than exaggerate it.
Seasonally, the Australian Shepherd sheds its undercoat — commonly referred to as “blowing coat” — usually once or twice per year. In warmer climates, shedding may be lighter but occur more continuously throughout the year.
Coat Maintenance and Care
Although the Australian Shepherd’s coat is very eye-catching, its maintenance is relatively simple when done regularly.
Brushing
Regular brushing is essential to:
-
Remove dead undercoat
-
Prevent matting, especially behind the ears and in the britches
-
Distribute the skin’s natural oils
Before brushing, we apply MD10 Detangling Spray, which helps detangle the coat and makes the process easier without damaging its natural structure. It also provides hydration, reduces hair breakage, and helps maintain elasticity, shine, and protection during brushing.
Areas Requiring Special Attention
-
Behind the ears
-
The back of the legs
-
Under the collar area
-
Tail and britches

Bathing
During the warmer months, we usually bathe our dogs approximately once a month, as this helps keep the coat clean, light, and well ventilated. However, it is important to note that such frequent bathing is not strictly necessary, and many Australian Shepherds can be bathed far less often without any issue.
When bathing, we use a keratin-based shampoo, which helps nourish the coat, maintain hair strength, and preserve the natural quality of the coat without weighing it down.

Drying and Post-Bath Care
After bathing, thorough rinsing and complete drying are essential, especially in a double-coated breed. Proper drying prevents moisture from being trapped in the undercoat and helps maintain healthy skin.
With a simple routine, regular brushing, appropriate products, and moderate bathing, the Australian Shepherd’s coat remains functional, healthy, and natural, exactly as it was intended in the breed.
